In the giant world which is social media, there are a large number of creatives trying to stand out from the crowd. Todays small business does just this. With its own uniqueness, Little Brick Home Style has become a hit amongst the every day home decor lovers of instagram. (Including me!). Little Brick Home creator Danyelle has incorporated her own style into her range of prints which includes self taken scenic photo and quotes prints. Today I talk to Danyelle to find out a bit more about her love of creating unique prints for herself and her customers and also finding out a bit more about the face behind the name.
Danyelle, tell us a little about yourself and Little Brick Home Style. I’m a wife and mum to two furry kids, Tonka and Tilly. We live on the beautiful Sunshine Coast QLD. Little Brick Home Style was created after posting images of my prints that I had made for my own home on my Instagram page. I was inspired by people asking where they could also purchase them and so with a background in photography I decided to give it a good go.
What is your work history and why did you decide to start your business? I’m a stay at home wife and I have gone down a bunch of different career paths trying to find my way. Due to my Cystic Fibrosis it was hard to find a job with a good work/life/health balance. I have done things like Animal ecology and volunteering in a zoo, to hairdressing, to wedding photography and even started two different Uni degrees. Creating prints from home allows me to be creative, work as hard as I physically can, plus look after my health. I really feel like this is where I’m supposed to be right now.
How long has Little Brick Home been open and where do you work from? I officially started in February 2016 – So not that long. I work from home and we have invested in a beautiful A2 professional printer so that allows me to print my own work and make sure it’s to a standard that I would expect. I also take all my own photography for my prints so nothing beats a day out exploring our beautiful Sunshine Coast for Inspiration.
How did you come up with the name Little Brick Home Style?
I was creating prints for my own home. We have a unique style that’s not for everyone, so I really was creating prints for our little brick home. The name stuck and I love it.
Do you currently have any stockists for your prints? Not yet. That would be amazing! I’m still in my first few months of opening so I’m still learning and growing but I look forward to seeing my prints in businesses. I put a lot of love and thought into my photographic prints so I get a lot of enjoyment seeing them on the walls of other people, I would cry if I walked into a shop and seen something I have designed on the wall!
Do you have a best selling print? It changes weekly! Although I think people really love the square cards. You are able to choose from a range of different designs and everyone loves a good flat lay and they are perfect for that.
What has been the best moment so far in your business? Every single sale I get is the best moment for me. Not because it’s a sale, but because someone liked one of my designs enough to purchase it and put it in their home. Home for me is my most special place on earth, so to put something in your home that I have created is a great feeling.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and Little Brick Home so far and how have you overcome it? I think being unique. There is a lot of businesses doing the same thing (prints) so it’s hard to come up with something new and different. I do try and have the typography prints available so that I have something for everyone, but my photographic prints are my heart and soul. So I’m going to stay true to that, and hopefully that’s what will make me different.
What is your vision for Little Brick Home Style? I hope Little Brick Home continues to grow and I continue to create prints that people can enjoy in their homes. I have so many plans and goals. Sometimes I put a lot of pressure on myself so I need to just slow down and enjoy it a bit more. I’m still only new in business but I look forward to seeing what happens next.
What other small businesses on social media do you enjoy following and would recommend? I love so many businesses… The first few that spring to mind are @featherandoak, @me_and_mae, @indieandbeau, and my new faves opening up soon, @mono_collective.
And finally, what gets you through the day? Coffee… And the support I get from my husband, friends and Instagram community!
