One of the reasons I love Instagram so much is because you meet genuine, down to earth, hard working, creative people. Today’s business is Kaki Designs and is run by work at home mum Kirstie who certainly ticks all these boxes! Not only does she make gorgeous timber creations, she is a bit of a super mum who runs her business with a toddler and an 8 week old. I bow down to you lovely lady! I enjoyed finding out more Kaki Designs and am so happy to share my interview Kirstie with you guys.
Tell us a little about yourself and Kaki Designs.
I am a 24 year old stay at home mum to two little boys, Cade who is 2 and Kai who was born this year in April. My fiancé Cory works as a carpet layer and I started Kaki when I felt bad that Cory was the only one who was out making money. I never wanted my kids in child care so I knew the only way to work and stay at home with them was to work from home. I’ve always been quite creative so the logical thing to do was to start something from home using my creativity. Kaki Designs is a small business that has the capacity to grow and eventually I hope for it to be a successful small business that has a team running it, not just myself.
What is your work history and why you decided to start your small business?
I’ve always worked in an office or retail and sure, I’ve loved the interaction with customers and work colleagues, however I’ve always wanted to be a mum! When I was 21 I lost my dad. It was the hardest time of my life but from that, a positive came 9 months to the day of losing my hero, as I gave birth to my first child Cade. I then knew it would be a long time before I would be returning to work after all, life is too short and precious to be out working and away from your children. My partner earns enough for me not to work and working from home gives me something to focus on too. And to me, it’s not a just a job. I’m doing something I love and I get to have my babies with me while I do it.
How did you come up with the name Kaki Designs?
Originally the business was started between my best friend and I. Her name is Katie and mine being Kirstie, we took the first 2 letters from both of our names and came up with KaKi. The business is now run solely by me but I didn’t want to change the name as it still held so much importance to me.
How long has Kaki been running and where do you work from?
I opened my small business in September 2014. As mentioned, originally when it began, it was myself and my best friend designing and creating invitations. Early 2016 the business took a new turn and I started designing and creating laser cut wooden wall art. Kaki Designs is run from home between my office and my studio in my garage.
Do you have any stockists for your products and if so who are they?
So far we have no stockist for our products however we are on the hunt for some, and woukd love to hear from anyone who would be interested in stocking our range.
Do you have a best selling product?
Our best selling product is our “Initials Wall Hanging” which is a plaque with a couples initials, the date they met or got married along with a love heart graphic which is laser cut out of a timber circle.
What has been the best moment so far for Kaki?
The best moment in my business so far would have to be seeing people actually recommend my business and seeing the amount of orders I’ve had come through. I don’t usually believe in myself (it’s probably my biggest fault) and I always doubt mysel. So when I saw my business start growing from nothing, and I know it’s still very small, I was really proud of myself.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and your business so far and how have you overcome it?
My biggest challenge for me and my business has been since my second son was born, I had to learn to juggle my time all over again. It has taken me awhile to get back into the swing of things, but I feel like I have accomplished so much for my family and my business this year. I’ve learnt how to juggle myself between a crazy toddler and a beautiful new born. I’ve completed our family by going through a very hard birth of Kai. And I’ve kept my business running along with a new release of products that is about to be launched (so keep your eye out)! My partner and I have had a rough few years with a lot that has happened to us emotionally, but I feel like Kaki Design has kept me sane in a way as its given me something to focus on.
What is your vision for Kaki Designs?
I hope that one day Kaki is well known to many people and that we have returning customers that have helped grow the business from the start. I want the business to be successful and loved. I take so much pride in every order that comes through and I can only hope that the customer receiving it loves it as much as I loved making it!
And finally, what gets you through the day?
Firstly, Coffee – haha no but really, the inspiration of my two gorgeous little boys gets me through each day! They are sthe most loving, caring little creatures ever.Without them I would never have had any of the inspiration to get creative and work for my self like I have!
