Leading manchester and home decor store Adairs is know for affordable and on trend wares available both online and in store. In recent years, well-known Australian TV star, fashion and home décor designer Rebecca Judd has worked closely with the Adairs team to create stunning ranges of soft furnishing pieces. This includes the recent summer 2016/17 range which is full of bright outdoors inspired pieces which includes four fully reversible bed cover designs. Also included in the range is a range of complementing terrazzo inspired cushions, bold geometric outdoor cushions, giant outdoor round towels with touches of metallic for some extra glam, and of course the very popular Zephyr throw blankets.
I have been lucky enough to work with some pieces from the new range and am very excited to share with you four different styling suggestions for the Rebecca Judd Rio quilted jersey quilt cover set and complementing pieces. The Rio is my personal favourite from the summer collection as not only is there the gorgeous soft grey textured side which fits perfectly in my interior, but the reverse side is a stunning pink geometric pattern, perfect for bringing colour into the home. The cotton quilt is beautifully soft and smooth and is stylish, luxurious bedding at its finest! The contrast of the grey and the textured blush pink with hints of sky blue, black, soft mint and ash gives you the best of both worlds when it comes to styling your bedroom. Simple textured grey for a sleek, modern look which is perfect for those cooler months. And a pop of colour to lift the room when those warm summer months appear.
The design of the reversible quilt covers is genius. Two covers for the price of one! And with the Rebecca Judd range, you are getting two completely different looks which is an added bonus. I also love the fact that you can use the cover minus the insert as an extra layering piece during the warmer months. Pop it straight over the bed over the sheets or fold in half and drape over the end of the bed over another plain quilt. Another tip when bed styling is to purchase the next size quilt cover and insert up from the bed size. The excess will hang over the edge and give a fuller, more luxurious look and feel.
Below I am going to show and explain how I styled the Rio range four different ways within my home. Showing just how versatile the Rebecca Judd for Adairs range can be.
LOOK ONE – Using the quilt with the textured grey side showing, I have layered the bed with complementing items also from the Adairs range. This includes the reversible euro cushions (pink side forward), Home Republic Zephyr cable knit cushion and Rebecca Judd terrazzo cushion. By folding over the top of the quilt and revealing the blush pink geometric pattern , the overall look is lifted instead of being a solid grey. Using cushions and pillows layered gives a look of luxury and again adds more colour and texture to the overall appearance. I have kept the styling simple and practical using items that complement the colours from the quilt.
LOOK TWO – Again, Imhave used the quilt cover with the grey side showing. However, I have added more depth to the look by using the euro cushions on the darker side and have also added the Zephyr cable knit throw in the new coal colour. This throw is divine! The heavy knit is beautiful and suited to so many styles of interior. I have played around with the positioning of the cushions to achieve a different look. Again using a mixture of colour and pattern to lift the look and give it an overall luxe, modern appeal. When using bright colours combined with pattern and texture, you don’t need to go overboard with the decor styling. Just a few complimenting pieces to finish the room, including some greenery.
LOOK THREE – When a friend saw that I would be styling the Rio range, she asked if I thought that the set could be masculine enough for a master bedroom. My answer was definitely! The beauty of the Rebecca Judd range is that with most items being reversible, you can use the plainer sides to create a more neutral, sleek look. I have styled my own master bedroom using layered shades of greys which I think is suitable for both males and females, and also works within a range of different interiors. Again, using the textured side if the Rio quilt cover, the matching euros on the dark side and of course the Zephyr throw blanket in coal. As most ladies will know, our partners often dislike too many cushions on a bed. So I have kept the styling minimal using just the one Home Republic cable knit cushion which ties in perfectly. To add another layer to bed, I have also draped my faux cow hide rug over the end. The different tones of grey work so well together and give the Rio a whole new look without really bringing in many other items.
LOOK FOUR – For my final look, I have used the Rio quilt cover on the patterned, blush pink side. Perfect for adding a pop of on trend colour in a master bedroom or guest bedroom. I also think it would fit perfectly into a teen girls room. Stick to solid colour and textured scatter cushions as there is already enough pattern the quilt itself. Too much pattern on top of pattern can result in a busy look, which can draw away from the quilt itself which you want to be the star! Add layers with plain throw blankets or folded comforters. Or add a bit of texture as I have in this room with a faux fur. This side of the quilt is perfect for those who love the Scandi tones of pink and greys, yet want to be a bit outside the box and add some colour and fun to their space.
Besides having the opportunity to style with some gorgeous items from the new Rebecca Judd range, I was also lucky enough to be able to ask Bec some questions about the new range whilst also finding out some of her tips for decorating your own home.
Your new range for Adairs is inspired by the outdoors, yet is suitable for both indoor and outdoor living. What are your styling suggestions when it comes to creating harmonious spaces which marry together and flow between inside and out? Keep to the same colour palette and make sure the prints are complementary.
What pieces from the new range do you especially love and use within your own home? All of them! The Zephyr cable knit throw I have in every colour and just about every room. Billie has the pink on her bed, I have the silver grey and the new Coal dark grey is on our sofa. I’m also obsessed with the new outdoor cushions and have about ten sitting on my bench seats in my outdoor area.
The Zephyr throws have been hugely popular and have become a staple item in many homes across Australia. When creating unique pieces such as the throws, are you influenced by anything in particular? I’m usually influenced by what I feel is missing in the market and what I would love for my own home. If I can’t find it anywhere, I work with the Adairs team to design it. The throws came about because I have a huge King bed and I found no throws on the market provided that giant size which looked good on a big bed, in a cable knit style which was also super hardy and could be thrown in the wash. With young kids around I needed something that was versatile and not precious. Hence the Zephyr was born!
Fashion plays a huge role in your life and career. Do you consider upcoming and current fashion trends when it comes to home decor design? Absolutely! Fashion trends influence interior design so I am always looking at the latest trends and adapting them to my range. From colours and prints to different textures, I am always looking for ways to integrate what’s hot in fashion into an interiors genre.
The affordable home decorating trend has boomed over recent years. People love to be able to give their homes a magazine look without blowing their budget. Why do you think now is the time for everyday Australian to take advantage of the huge range of decor products available to them? Yes- it’s an exciting time to be a home decorator and there is so much inspiration around from Instagram to TV shows like The Block. Thanks to awesome design and manufacturing techniques which allows the audience to access product at a more affordable price, it gives the consumer licence to purchase more and redecorate spaces in their homes multiple times a year. Gone are the days where it cost more than $500 for a new bedding set, these days you can grab some absolute bargains for incredible and high quality pieces.
The idea of injecting colour into a space can be daunting for some home decorators. What are your tips for using colour within the home? If it scares you, start with a cushion or a throw and grow from there as you gain more confidence. As I love colour I always start with colours found in the artwork in my room. I choose a colour from the art (not the most obvious one) and add three pops of it around the room. This makes it cohesive.
A big thanks to Adairs and Rebecca Judd for allowing me to work with such beautiful items and taking the time to give us all some inside information on the new summer range.
